Te Awa Tupua: peace, justice and sustainability through Indigenous tourism

Te Awa Tupua is an ancestor of the M?ori people Whanganui, and also Whanganui River, who in 2017 was formally recognised as a person. While legally conferring personhood upon element nature relatively novel, it recognises fundamental principle indigeneity, that all things—human nonhuman—are related. We explore intersections peace, justice, sustainability through Indigenous tourism case studies three enterprises on (the River). Our paper spotlights findings. First, treaty settlements elevate status knowledge contain elements peace-making economy-making decolonising projects self-determined development. Second, while indigeneity foundational, we found syncretism evident enterprises. Third, uncovered socioecological dissonance attitudes towards commercial growth, with opting for slower lower growth favour environmental community wellbeing. propose model called kaupapa t?poi. conclude by suggesting reconciling differences viewpoints between non-M?ori will require involvement several institutional actors, starting Tupua.
